Frances Shelley by Craig Girling

I have found that its absolutely true, that making music helps process emotions, as well as explore ourselves more deeply. It started as a child, piano playing was my refuge and sanctuary.  Not enjoying having to read notes on a page, I was thrilled to find I could easily make up my own music. I created my first piece, aged around 6 years old, and sometimes play it at the end of my performances . .its a wild sort of polka in C major!   For me ‘composing’ and improvisation is still where the magic lies.

I have been releasing music as an independent since 2000. The wild open skies and cold North Sea inspired my first two albums INTERIORS and WILDERNESS RHAPSODIES  (available on Bandcamp).

For many years music making was mostly just for friends, but In 2018 I was encouraged to come out of hiding, and my album A PLACE THAT EXISTS was released by Nils Frahm’s publishers Manners Mcdade.  It is a celebration of the wild and remote places both within and without, inspired by my frequent visits to Perthshire Scotland.  Since then I have released 4 more albums and numerous singles and reworks. All sorts of adventures and projects have arisen and I have had the good fortune to play live on some wonderful stages around the world, including Q3 Ambientfest in Germany, Latitude Festival, ALSO festival, Flipside and Snape Maltings to name a few.

Collaboration is the greatest gift and I have been fortunate to make music with all kinds of amazing musicians including Lubomyr Melnyk, Talvin Singh, Alexandra Hamilton Ayers, Anna Phoebe, the Ceeys brothers.

I have almost always lived in the countryside and only really feel at home when I am surrounded by trees, mountains, wild flowers, rivers and sea, these are my friends and inspire all my music.  I talk to them.  After many years of music making, creating and running the venue Butley Priory in Suffolk I moved to wild and magical Sintra Portugal in 2022;  here I have found the peace and space that I need to focus on my music. I am an animist and long time environmentalist, all my work is influenced by and dedicated to our mother, the natural world.
